As you may be aware, a face-to-face meeting was held a couple of weeks ago in Atlanta between JBoss Seam and ICEfaces project developers. The objective was to identify and map out actions required to ensure a tight level of integration between our two products. I think we all agree that a tightly integrated ICEfaces JBoss product offering holds tremendous potential. From an ICEsoft perspective the meeting was very productive.

After the trip we set to work attempting to resolve the integration bugs identified by our joint communities and the development groups. After a period of analysis it became apparent that the nature of the changes required would be difficult or impossible to address in a simple patch release (we initially planned to release an ICEfaces 1.5.4 release to address many of these issues).

We now believe it is necessary to evolve ICEfaces in a manner that facilitates very effective integration not only with Seam but with technologies such as portals and portlets. This effort is going on now and the results will be made available to the community as part of the 1.6.0 development cycle, including regular Developer Builds going forward (every 2-3 weeks).

Note that the first drop (1.6.0-DR#1) which is available now does not contain significant improvements in our existing level of Seam support, but subsequent releases will.

Seam integration is currently a top priority for the ICEfaces team and we are committing the required resources to make this happen as quickly as possible. As the new development builds become available we encourage you to test them and give us your feedback.

Regards,
Ken Fyten
ICEsoft VP Product Development
ICEfaces v1.6.0 DR#1 is an unstable Development Build that provides an early-access preview of new features, enhancements, and fixes that will be included in the upcoming ICEfaces v1.6.0 release.

This build has only been lightly tested and should be considered unstable. It is completely unsuitable for Production use. Use this build only if you
are prepared to deal with problems and are willing to report them to the forum or JIRA issue
tracker.

Note: Portlets are unsupported in this build due to incomplete and ongoing internal refactoring required to better accomodate integration with Seam, Portlets, and to resolve ICE-1089. Portlet support will return (and improve) in future builds.

See the JIRA Change Log for the complete list of new features and fixes included in this release.

It is our intention to provide regular Development Builds like this one at key development milestones, approx. every 2-4 weeks.

If you have comments, suggestions, or problems related to using the Development Build please post them in the new Development Build Feedback forum.

I am very pleased to announce the arrival of the most significant upgrade to the www.icefaces.org community site since it's inception!

The new features include:

We know many of you have been waiting for these enhancements and we'd like to thank-you for your patience. We hope you'll find that these new site features will make your ICEfaces community involvement more efficient and rewarding.

Folks,

Just wanted to let you know the accordian is now available in the v1.6.0-DR#1 Development Build, it's called ice:panelAccordion.

Ken
Alex,

Sorry, the JIRA system hasn't been officially "launched" yet. When it has there will be a big party to celebrate and everyone's invited!

Well, we'll at least post an announcement in the News and Announcements forum... :)

We're working through some last minute issues, expect it to be available by the end of this week (March 2nd), perhaps a little sooner.

FYI: Your icefaces.org account will work successfully once it's been launched.

Thanks for your interest!

Regards,
Ken
Hello,

Starting sometime Monday you will be able to report bugs using our new public JIRA Issue Tracker.

Regards,
Ken
Tony,

We are working toward an ICEfaces v1.5.4 release that will contain several high-priority Seam related fixes. It should be available by the end of February. It will contain fixes for the following issues, possibly more:
  • During the INVOKE_APPLICATION phase of application operations that are printing to PDF, SEAM is directly rendering facelets output, and ICEfaces components are mistakenly rendering at this time.

  • ICEfaces core behavior needs to be verified with respect to Seam Request scope. ICEfaces application support requires, and was written to use, a 'conversation' like preservation of state between requests. This can interfere with Seam's expected request scoping. An approach for ICEfaces in both a Seam and non-Seam environment needs to be developed.

  • Server initiated rendering causes an application error similar to the following (with Seam): java.lang.IllegalStateException: No active application scope

Beyond the 1.5.4 release we are also making numerous Seam related improvements in the upcoming ICEfaces 1.6 release. Rough timing is to have that available in Beta by early April. There will also be several early access developer builds of 1.6 between now and then as well, the first should be out in February if you're just looking to try out the new stuff.

It is our goal to resolve all significant Seam-related issues in the v1.6 release.

Regards,
Ken
We're going to be adding a public issue tracker to the .org site next week, this will contain 1.6 roadmap information. I'll also be posting a summary overview of major new features, etc. for 1.6. It's been slightly delayed as we're currently reviewing how to fast-track our Seam integration support so that may alter our 1.6 roadmap slightly.

Regards,
Ken
Hello everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that within the next couple of weeks we'll be rolling out some major enhancements to the icefaces.org site:

  • JIRA Issue Tracker

  • Subversion (SVN) source-code repository access (read-only)

  • Development milestone bundle downloads (unstable, pre-release)

  • Enhanced Contribution pages for easier contributor sign-up and contribution submission

  • Additional forum categories

I know some of you have been waiting for these items and your patience is appreciated.

Regards,
Ken
We're not seeing any issues.

Can you provide more details on specifically what isn't working?

Regards,
Ken
We'll be making some announcements by the end of the week regarding the 1.6 roadmap, as well as detail for providing additional .org features such as SVN access, JIRA issue tracker, etc.

Ken
Hello,

ICEfaces 1.5.3 was just released this morning.

ICEfaces 1.6 is currently planned to be feature-complete by the end of March, however, the first early access "alpha" release will occur in February, likely the week of Feb. 22nd.

More details coming later this week.

Regards,
Ken
ICEfaces 1.5.3 is now available for download here.

See the Release Notes for more information.
Just wanted to let everyone know in case they missed it that the ICEfaces v1.5.2 release yesterday includes an early access version of the ICEfaces support for NetBeans 5.5 with the Visual Web Pack.

You can download it from the usual spot on the Official Releases page.

Regards,
Ken
Hello,

Can someone please provide more information on how to reproduce the issue that is being discussed here?

Specifically:
- Where does the error appear (browser dialog window, etc.)
- What browser and version are you using when you see the problem.
- What other ICEfaces configurations are being used (async, sync, SSL, etc.).

We are having trouble reproducing the issue.

Regards,
Ken
